Portable fire extinguishers in Malaysia are covered by MS 1539. Part 3 deals with selection and installation, and Part 4 covers maintenance. Recharging is covered by MS 1181. Fire extinguishment is also part of UBBL 1984, Part VIII.

Here is what proper upkeep looks like:

• Monthly visual check by the owner or premises team.

• Annual professional service by a competent person.

• A valid tag or sticker on every unit.

• Hydrostatic test every 5 years for CO2, water and foam extinguishers.

Under eFEIS, Bomba's online system for portable extinguishers, serviced units receive a QR sticker. Note that eFEIS is for portable extinguisher servicing only. It is not the portal for renewing your fire certificate.

For designated premises under the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341), the fire certificate (Perakuan Bomba) must be renewed every year. Operating without one is an offence under section 33, with a fine up to RM50,000, jail up to 5 years, or both. Expired or unserviced extinguishers are a common issue to fix before renewal.
