What Is a Fire Hose Reel System and Why Do You Need It?

A fire hose reel is a first-aid firefighting tool. It is designed for early Class A fires, meaning fires involving ordinary combustibles such as paper, wood, fabric and cardboard. A typical hose reel carries a 30 m x 25 mm hose, connected to a permanent water supply, so it can be used for longer than a portable extinguisher.
In Malaysia, hose reel requirements are driven by:
UBBL 1984, Part VIII – the Uniform Building By-Laws cover fire alarms, detection and extinguishment (by-laws from 225 onwards). The Tenth Schedule sets out which systems are required for each building type.
MS 1489 Part 1 – the Malaysian Standard for hose reel installations.
MS 1447 – the Malaysian Standard for hose reels themselves.
Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341) – designated premises must hold a valid fire certificate (Perakuan Bomba), renewed every year. Operating without one is an offence under section 33, with a fine of up to RM50,000, up to 5 years in jail, or both.
A hose reel system that is missing, faulty or poorly maintained can hold up your Perakuan Bomba renewal. We recommend starting the renewal process at least 30 days before your certificate expires, so there is time to fix any issues we find.

Hose Reel: frequently asked questions
How often should a fire hose reel be serviced?
Hose reels should receive professional maintenance at least once a year. Between services, building owners should keep reels accessible and report any visible damage or leaks.
What kind of fire can a hose reel put out?
A hose reel is designed for early Class A fires – ordinary combustibles like paper, wood and fabric. It should not be used on electrical fires or burning cooking oil.
Is a hose reel the same as a fire hydrant?
No. A hose reel is for first-aid firefighting by occupants. A fire hydrant supplies a much larger volume of water and is used by Bomba firefighters.
Will a faulty hose reel affect my Perakuan Bomba?
It can. Hose reels form part of the fire protection system checked for designated premises. Fixing problems before your renewal helps avoid delays.
My hose reel has low water pressure. What should I do?
Low pressure can come from a pump fault, a leak in the pipework, a closed or faulty valve, or a problem with the water tank. Contact us for a site visit so we can find the cause.

Kenapa Sistem Gelung Hos Penting?
