Fire Certificate (Perakuan Bomba) Renewal: What Business Owners Need to Know

Updated: 4 days ago

Your fire certificate (Perakuan Bomba) expires every 12 months, and renewing it is not automatic. Under the Fire Services Act 1988, designated premises must hold a valid fire certificate, and operating without one is an offence with a fine of up to RM50,000, up to five years' jail, or both. Business owners who treat renewal as a last-minute task tend to run into avoidable delays. Here's how to make it straightforward.

First, Clear Up a Common Mix-Up: eFEIS Is Not the Renewal Portal

Many people assume the fire certificate is renewed through eFEIS. It isn't. eFEIS is Bomba's online system for portable fire extinguishers. Every extinguisher serviced by a Bomba-registered competent person (orang kompeten) enrolled in eFEIS gets an eFEIS QR sticker, and the record sits in Bomba's system.

Fire certificate renewal is a separate application to Bomba. But eFEIS still matters for your renewal: expired or unrecorded extinguishers are one of the most common problems found during inspection.

Start the Clock Early

Apply for renewal at least 30 days before your certificate expires, and earlier if you can. That buffer exists for a reason: if the inspection turns up an issue, such as an extinguisher overdue for service, a fire alarm fault or a blocked escape route, you need time to fix it before your current certificate lapses.

What Is Typically Checked During Renewal

Officers are verifying that the fire safety systems for your premises are still in place and working. Typically reviewed:

  • Fire extinguishers with valid, current eFEIS stickers

  • Fire alarm and detection systems in working order

  • Emergency lighting and exit signage

  • Escape routes, unobstructed and correctly signed

  • Sprinkler, hose reel or hydrant systems where your premises has them

If anything has drifted out of compliance since your last renewal, for example layout changes, storage blocking an exit, or extinguisher servicing that lapsed, it will surface here.

Documents to Keep Ready

Renewal moves faster when you are not hunting for paperwork mid-process. Keep these up to date year-round:

  • Your current fire certificate

  • Fire system maintenance and service records

  • eFEIS records for every extinguisher on the premises

  • Fire alarm log book

  • Floor plans showing escape routes and equipment locations

Common Reasons Renewals Get Delayed

  • Extinguishers serviced late, or by someone who is not a Bomba-registered competent person enrolled in eFEIS

  • Faulty fire alarm panels or detectors left unrepaired

  • Building changes (new partitions, storage, renovation) not reflected in updated floor plans

  • Applications submitted so close to expiry that there is no time to fix issues found during inspection
